Yesterday, Napoleon received his very first BarkBox . For those of you who haven’t heard of it, BarkBox offers a subscription to a monthly surprise of curated treats, toys, and products. I decided to bite the bullet a couple of weeks ago and bought Napoleon a one year subscription to the service after reading about it (without consulting Lauren).
Shockingly, I think Napoleon would make a better homepage dog…
The 12-month subscription came to $257.10 (after a 10% discount ), which works out to $21.42/month, not bad for us Canadians considering the advertised American price is $18/month. And the boxes don’t contain cheap, junky treats, “We don’t include rawhide (or anything processed with formaldehyde). Minimal processing; no glycerin whenever possible; wheat, gluten, soy, corn, filler-free whenever possible; organic whenever possible. We are moving toward limited, if not single, ingredient products.” That’s the kind of stuff I really like to read. And, to top it off, they donate 10% of their proceeds to dog rescues, just for good measure.
So a few days ago when I realized our first BarkBox was on the way (they ship the 15th of every month), I got really excited about surprising Napoleon with some new toys (potentially) and gauge Lauren’s reaction to my impulse.
Thankfully, Lauren and Napoleon were pretty much on board as soon as they saw the little stamps on the side of the box.
This month’s box included a frog, banana crisps, freeze-dried liver, and the “R2P Monkey Silly Bums.” I have to say, however ridiculous, this monkey bum is a winner and a total recommended buy. The bum has “enticing crinkling and squeaking,” and Napoleon is obsessed with the crinkling. It’s also really well made and has stood up to some really strong pulling (RIP Cow and Sock Monkey).
Overall, I’m really happy with the service’s first offering and am excited to see what comes in next month’s box. It’s a neat concept and, now that we have a healthy arsenal of toys, helps me resist the urge to cruise Amazon every day for new chews. I don’t want to give this a rating out of ten yet, but I do like the service and will be recommending it to other dog owners. Check it out.
